Selling by size and colour, without fake products

The short answer

A product in Tiram can carry variants — one row per size, colour or any other option you define on its category. Each variant has its own SKU, its own prices and its own stock and FIFO cost layers, and the exact variant that was sold or received is printed on the bill, the PDF, the purchase order and every stock report. You still search for one product; the picker groups its variants underneath.

Where the variant appears

A variant that only exists in the product master is a filing decision. What makes it useful is that the specific one you sold shows up everywhere the transaction does — which, as of the latest release, is every document and report surface below.

Surfaces that carry the variant's label and its own SKU.
SurfaceWhat it showsNotes

Invoice screen and Quick Bill

The variant label on the line, and its SKU in the picker

The grouped picker searches the product and offers its variants, so a busy counter types one name, not twelve.

Invoice PDF and printed bill

The variant on every line, in all five bill formats

Thermal 58/80 mm and A4 alike — the customer's copy names what they actually bought.

Public receipt link

The variant on the shared receipt page

The link you send a customer shows the same identity as your own copy.

Purchase order, goods receipt, vendor bill

The variant ordered, the variant received, the variant billed

Including their shareable links and PDFs, so a vendor sees exactly which size you are asking for.

Credit note and debit note

The variant being returned or corrected

A return that names the wrong size is a stock error that survives the paperwork.

Warehouse stock and movement report

Stock and every movement at variant level

Because stock is held per variant, not per product — the movement ledger reads the same way.

Custom report builder

Variant as a grouping axis

So "which colour sells in which shop" is a report you build, not a question you estimate.

What a variant owns

These are the fields that make a variant a real stock item rather than a label on a line.

Identity
Its own SKUUnique across your business, and scannable — so a barcode resolves to the size, not just the style.
Pricing
Own or inheritedPurchase price, selling price and MRP can sit on the variant, or be left blank to inherit the product's.
Stock
Per variant, per warehouseLive levels, low-stock flags, transfers and opening stock all count the variant, not the parent.
Cost
FIFO layers per variantSo margin on the black L is not an average smeared across every colour you stock.
On old bills
Frozen at sale timeThe label is snapshotted onto the invoice line, so renaming a variant later doesn't rewrite last year's paperwork.
Tax treatment
Per variantEach variant carries its own tax-inclusive flag, because a multi-variant parent holds no price of its own.

Rules that keep the history honest

Variants touch stock, cost and printed documents, so the invariants matter more than the convenience.

A variant that has ever been used is never deleted or rewritten

Once a variant appears on a transaction line, a stock row, a movement or a cost layer, its existence and its defining values are fixed. Editing the product's options can deactivate it, so it stops being offered — it cannot erase what was sold.

Every line picks a variant, even for single-item products

A product with no options still has one default variant behind the scenes, which is why nothing changes for a shop that sells single items. The picker doesn't ask, and the documents show nothing extra.

The label on an old document stays what it was

Invoice lines keep a snapshot of the variant label as it read at sale time. Rename s-black to Small / Black today and last year's bills still say what the customer was given.

Variants come from the category's attributes

You choose which attributes vary — Size, Colour, Pack — on the category, and the product generates the combinations. That is what stops two staff members inventing S-Blk and Small Black as separate products.

Price resolution is one rule, everywhere

A blank price on a variant means "use the product's", and that resolution happens in one place rather than being reimplemented per screen — so the bill, the picker and the report agree.

What people expect variants to be

Two habits carried over from spreadsheets and from simpler apps.

  • Every size has to be its own product.

That is the workaround variants remove. One parent product holds the catalogue facts — name, HSN code, category, tax rate — and the variants hold what genuinely differs, so your product list stays readable at 12 sizes.

  • Adding or renaming an option will break old bills.

It can't. Used variants are immutable, unused ones can be deactivated, and each invoice line already carries the label it was sold under.

  • Variants are a paid add-on for bigger shops.

They are part of the product catalogue on every plan, Silver included.

Which plan includes product variants

Product variants are part of the catalogue and are available on every Tiram plan — Silver, Gold and Platinum — on cloud and on the Windows/Mac desktop app.

Two neighbouring capabilities are tiered, and it is worth knowing which: barcode and price-label printing and scanning a barcode at the counter need Gold or above, and stock in a second or further warehouse (plus inter-warehouse transfers) is Gold and above. Variant-level stock in your first warehouse is not gated.

FAQs

Can I keep stock size-wise and colour-wise?
Yes. Stock is held per variant per warehouse, so each size and colour has its own live level, its own low-stock flag and its own FIFO cost layers.
Does the size show on the printed bill?
Yes — the variant label appears on the invoice line in all five bill formats, on thermal 58/80 mm and A4, on the PDF and on the public receipt link.
Can each variant have a different price?
Yes. Purchase price, selling price and MRP can be set per variant, or left blank on a variant to inherit the product's price.
What happens to old invoices if I rename a variant?
Nothing. Each invoice line stores the variant label as it read when the sale happened, so historical documents keep saying what the customer actually bought.
Does each variant get its own barcode?
Each variant has its own SKU and can carry its own barcode, and a scan at the counter resolves to that exact variant. Barcode printing and scanning are Gold-and-above features.
Do I need variants if I sell single items?
No — and nothing changes for you. A product with no variant attributes quietly keeps one default variant, so your screens and documents look exactly as they always did.
