Reward points in Tiram: how to set up earning, redemption, and expiry for customer loyalty

Quick answer

Tiram's reward points run from Settings → Rewards: an on/off switch, an earn rate (% of each bill converted to points), a value per point, a minimum balance to redeem, a cap on how much of a bill points can cover, and an optional expiry. Reward points are a Gold-and-Platinum-plan feature — the Silver plan does not include them.

Enable reward points

Master on/off switch for earning and redemption.

Off → no new points earned or redeemed; existing balances are kept, not deleted.

Earn rate

Share of a bill's value converted to points.

2% on a ₹1,000 bill = 20 points earned.

Value per point

Rupee value of one point at redemption.

₹1.00 per point → 20 points = ₹20 off the next bill.

Min. balance to redeem

Points balance a customer must reach before redeeming anything.

Set to 100 → a customer holding 40 points can't redeem yet.

Max redeemable per bill

Cap on how much of a bill's payable amount points can cover.

50% cap on a ₹1,000 bill → at most ₹500 can be paid with points.

Points expire after

Days after earning before unused points lapse. 0 = never.

Set to 365 → points earned in July 2026 lapse if unredeemed by July 2027.

Workflow step

Why reward points matter for a repeat-customer business

Most Indian shops already run informal loyalty — a punch card, a notebook line, or a verbal promise (‘your 10th kg is free’). It works until the shop owner who remembers the promise is busy, on leave, or the notebook goes missing. A repeat customer who isn't tracked consistently eventually stops feeling recognised — and recognition, not just price, is what keeps a shop's regulars coming back over a Tally-only competitor or a supermarket with lower prices but no relationship.

Reward points formalise that recognition without adding counter friction: the system earns and tracks points automatically on every bill, and redemption is a tender type at checkout, not a separate reconciliation exercise.

2

Workflow step

Which Tiram plan includes reward points?

Reward points are included in Tiram's Gold and Platinum plans. The Silver plan does not include them — the Settings menu simply won't show the Rewards screen on Silver, and the underlying API rejects reward-point reads and writes with a plan-upgrade response rather than a generic error.

This is a plan-tier gate, not a platform gate: it applies identically whether you run Tiram as the cloud SaaS app or the offline Windows/Mac desktop app. If you're on Silver and want reward points, upgrading to Gold also unlocks WhatsApp invoicing and campaigns, multiple warehouses with stock transfers, custom roles, API keys, bulk exports, and a full audit trail — reward points don't ship as a standalone add-on.

3

Workflow step

Turning on reward points

From Settings → Rewards — a teammate needs permission to manage rewards settings, which Admins have by default and which you can grant to a custom role — toggle Enable reward points on. Turning it on doesn't retroactively create points for past bills; earning starts from the next invoice or Quick Bill sale onward.

Turning it back off at any time stops new earning and redemption immediately, but existing customer point balances are preserved — nothing is deleted. That makes reward points safe to trial: turn it on, watch a billing cycle, and turn it off without losing any other configuration if it isn't the right fit yet.

4

Workflow step

Setting the earn rate and value per point

Earn rate is the percentage of a bill's value that converts to points — set it to 2% and a ₹1,000 bill earns the customer 20 points. Value per point is what each point is worth when redeemed — at ₹1.00 per point, those 20 points are worth ₹20 off a future bill.

Together the two numbers set your effective loyalty discount rate: a 2% earn rate at ₹1.00 per point returns roughly 2% of spend as future discount, before any redemption caps. Most Indian retail loyalty programs sit between 1% and 5% earn rate; go higher only if your margins can absorb it — reward points are a real liability the moment they're earned, not just a marketing gesture.

5

Workflow step

Controlling redemption: minimum balance and the per-bill cap

Min. balance to redeem stops a customer cashing in a handful of points on their very next visit — set it to 100 and a customer sitting at 40 points has to keep shopping before they can redeem anything. Max redeemable per bill stops the opposite problem: a customer who has hoarded a large balance wiping out an entire sale with points. A 50% cap means at most half of any bill's payable amount can be covered by points; the rest is settled the normal way.

Both caps exist to protect a single bill's cash collection — a shop still needs real cash or UPI in hand to pay its own vendors, even on a bill where a loyal customer redeems generously.

6

Workflow step

Expiry: bounding the liability without punishing customers

Points expire after is set in days, counted from when each batch of points was earned. Leave it at 0 and points never expire — simplest for customers, but every point ever earned and not yet redeemed stays on your books indefinitely. Set it to, say, 365, and points earned in July 2026 lapse if the customer hasn't redeemed them by July 2027.

There's no universally right answer: a small neighbourhood shop with a stable, walk-in customer base often keeps expiry at 0 for goodwill; a multi-counter business with a larger, more diffuse customer base is more likely to set a 1-year expiry to keep the reward liability bounded and predictable.

7

Workflow step

How redemption applies at the counter

At Quick Bill or invoice checkout, a cashier bills a known customer as usual; redeemable points show against that customer's balance, and redemption applies as a payment tender on the post-tax total — the same way cash, UPI, or card do. GST is calculated on the full bill value first; the points tender then settles part of what's owed, subject to the minimum-balance and per-bill cap rules above.

Because redemption is a tender type rather than a manual discount line, it shows up correctly in your daily sales and payment-mode reports — a shop owner can see exactly how much revenue was collected via points on any given day, not just in total.

8

Workflow step

Reward points vs a paper punch card or a notebook ledger

A paper punch card or a notebook line is the status quo for most Indian small shops today. It works — until the card is lost, the notebook page is illegible, or the one staff member who remembers a regular customer's balance is off for the day. None of it survives a busy Saturday at a second counter.

Tiram's reward points remove the memory dependency: every customer's balance lives on their profile, visible to any staff member at any counter, calculated the same way every time, and redeemed as a normal part of the bill rather than a separate favour the cashier has to remember to apply.

Quick answers

What Tiram plan do I need for reward points?
Gold and Platinum. Reward points — the enable toggle, earn rate, redemption caps, and expiry — are not part of the Silver plan; upgrading to Gold also adds WhatsApp invoicing, multiple warehouses, custom roles, and API keys.
How do reward points work in billing software?
A percentage of each bill converts to points at a configurable earn rate; points carry a rupee value per point and can be redeemed as a payment tender on a future bill, subject to a minimum balance and a per-bill redemption cap.
Can I stop a customer from paying most of a bill with points?
Yes. Tiram's 'max redeemable per bill' setting caps redemption as a percentage of the bill's payable amount — a 50% cap means at least half of every bill is still settled in cash, UPI, or card.
Do unused reward points expire?
Only if you set an expiry. Tiram's 'points expire after' field is in days from the date each batch of points was earned; leaving it at 0 means points never expire.
What happens to reward point balances if I turn the feature off?
Existing customer balances are kept, not deleted. Turning reward points off only stops new earning and redemption going forward.

FAQs

Is reward points available on Tiram's Silver plan?
No. Reward points ship on the Gold and Platinum plans. On Silver, the Rewards screen doesn't appear in Settings, and the reward-point APIs are plan-gated. Upgrading to Gold unlocks it.
What's a reasonable earn rate to start with?
Most Indian retail loyalty setups run an earn rate between 1% and 5% of bill value. Start conservative — 1–2% — and adjust once you know how it affects repeat visits and margin; earn rate and value per point together set your real loyalty discount cost.
Can a customer redeem points across several visits, or only all at once?
Redemption isn't all-or-nothing. A customer can redeem any amount up to the smaller of their available balance and the bill's 'max redeemable per bill' cap, on any bill where they've met the minimum balance to redeem.
Does the Windows/Mac desktop app support reward points the same way as the cloud app?
Yes. Reward points are gated by plan tier, not by platform — a Gold or Platinum subscription includes reward points identically on the cloud app and the offline desktop app.
Who on my team can change reward point settings?
Only staff with permission to manage rewards — Admins have it by default, and you can grant it to a custom role if you use Tiram's custom RBAC roles (also a Gold-plan feature).
Does redeeming points create any GST complication?
No. GST is calculated on the full pre-redemption bill value as usual; the points redeemed apply afterward as a payment tender, the same way a partial cash or UPI payment would, so your GST liability isn't affected by how a customer chooses to pay.
Can I turn reward points off later without losing customer data?
Yes. Turning off 'Enable reward points' stops new earning and redemption immediately but keeps every customer's existing point balance and history intact, so you can turn it back on later without any data loss.
