Workflow guide

Import products, customers, and opening stock from Excel or CSV into Tiram

Quick answer

Tiram imports products, customers, and opening stock from a CSV or XLSX file in a 5-step wizard — choose the dataset, upload the file, map your columns (Tally column names are auto-detected), fix any flagged rows, then commit. Nothing is saved until you've reviewed it. Included on every plan.

What each import dataset needs

The three datasets Tiram's import wizard supports, and the core fields each one expects.
DatasetCore fields expectedWhat breaks if a required field is missing

Products

SKU, name, price, GST rate, HSN code, unit

Row is flagged for correction before commit — nothing half-saved

Customers

Name, phone, GSTIN, address, opening balance

Same — flagged row-by-row, fixed inline before import

Opening stock

Product reference, warehouse, quantity on hand

Needs products imported first so each row can match a product

1

Workflow step

When you need this

The import wizard exists for two moments: switching to Tiram from Tally, Vyapar, Excel, or another billing tool with an existing product and customer list, and simply starting with a catalog you've already built in a spreadsheet rather than typing every SKU in by hand. Either way, the goal is the same — get your existing data into Tiram once, correctly, instead of re-entering it product by product.

2

Workflow step

The 5-step import flow

1. Choose data — pick exactly one dataset to import: Products, Customers, or Opening stock. You can run the wizard again for the others afterward. 2. Upload file — a CSV or XLSX exported from Tally, Vyapar, Excel, or any other tool. 3. Match columns — map your file's column headers to Tiram's fields; Tally's own column names are detected automatically, so most Tally exports need little to no manual mapping. 4. Review rows — every row is validated before anything saves, with errors fixed inline, right in the browser. 5. Import — commit the reviewed rows to your account.

3

Workflow step

What each dataset needs

Products expects SKU, name, price, GST rate, HSN code, and unit — the same fields you'd fill in one at a time on the product form, just for your whole catalog at once. Customers expects name, phone, GSTIN, address, and any opening balance you want to carry over (so a customer's existing khata dues aren't lost in the switch). Opening stock expects a product reference, warehouse, and quantity on hand, and needs products imported first since each stock row has to match an existing product.

4

Workflow step

Column mapping and Tally auto-detection

Tiram's column-matching step recognizes common Tally export column names automatically, so a typical Tally product or customer export maps itself with little manual work. Any column that doesn't map automatically can be matched by hand — nothing about the wizard requires your source file's headers to match Tiram's field names exactly.

5

Workflow step

Validate-then-commit: why nothing saves until you review it

The wizard's Review rows step exists precisely so a messy export doesn't create messy data in Tiram — every row is checked before any of it is written to your account, and rows with problems (a missing required field, an invalid GST rate, a malformed phone number) are flagged for you to fix inline rather than silently skipped or silently accepted. You commit only once you're satisfied the reviewed data is correct.

Workflow step

Which Tiram plan includes data import?

The import wizard — for products, customers, and opening stock — is included on every Tiram plan — Silver, Gold, and Platinum — on both the cloud app and the offline Windows/Mac desktop app. There's no limit on how many times you can run it; import products today and customers next week without any restriction.

Quick answers

Can I import my Tally data into billing software?
Yes. Tiram's import wizard accepts a CSV or XLSX export from Tally and automatically detects Tally's own column names during the mapping step, so most Tally exports need little manual remapping.
What file formats can I import into Tiram?
CSV and XLSX (Excel) files, for products, customers, and opening stock, each imported as a separate run of the same 5-step wizard.
Will importing overwrite my existing products or customers?
The wizard validates every row before committing anything, and flags problems for you to fix first — nothing saves until you've reviewed the file, so you control exactly what gets added.
Can I import opening stock without importing products first?
No — opening stock rows need to match an existing product in Tiram, so import products first, then run the wizard again for opening stock.

FAQs

Where do I import data in Tiram?
Open the Import your data screen — accessible from setup or Settings — choose a dataset (Products, Customers, or Opening stock), and follow the 5-step wizard: Choose data, Upload file, Match columns, Review rows, Import.
Does Tiram support Vyapar or Excel exports, not just Tally?
Yes. Any CSV or XLSX file works, whatever tool it came from — Tally's column names are auto-detected specifically, and any other source is mapped manually in the same Match columns step.
What happens to rows with errors during import?
They're flagged during the Review rows step and can be corrected inline before you commit — nothing with an error is silently imported or silently dropped.
Can I run the import wizard more than once?
Yes, as many times as you need — a common pattern is importing products first, then customers, then opening stock, as three separate runs.
Is there a cost to importing my data into Tiram?
No. The import wizard is included on every Tiram plan, Silver, Gold, and Platinum, with no import-specific fee.
Does data import work on the offline desktop app?
Yes, identically to the cloud app — it isn't gated by platform or plan.
